What did Southern Baptist leader Al Mohler mean by saying Christians have exhibited a form of homophobia?

Its not the sinner but the sin. All of sin, sins of all kinds not just homosexuality. They will end up in hell if they don't repent, releasing negative vibes against them is not good. All we can do is plant a seed, with care, and water it well. But being mean and confrontational about it is going to create more rebellion. All we can do is pray with them and for them and hope the Holy Spirit takes over their lives.
